What are the
different types of massage and what do they mean?
NEUROMUSCULAR
MASSAGE
For those individuals in need of pain relief (or referred
pain). The techniques applied here help to improve joint and muscular
function, as well as range of motion. This is good for people with chronic
pain in shoulders or back, migraine headaches due to muscle tension or
stress. NMT is also good for injury
recovery. NMT is designed to correct chronic imbalances to help the body heal
itself by eliminating pain and dysfunction. This is different from many other
types of massage that relieve stress and rub out minor muscle aches. This
technique goes beyond the muscles and works simultaneously to release nerve
compression and/or entrapment, correct ischemia (lack of blood to soft
tissue). Placing the body in proper alignment brings harmony and balance to
the body system.
MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
A technique that
releases restrictions in the fascia layer to eliminate pain and restore
motion. Fascia is connective tissue that is all over the body. Every part of
your body is covered in one connecting tissue including muscle, bone,
arteries, veins, and even your internal organs. Just imagine a wet suite that
doesn’t fit properly! Physical trauma,
injury or even poor posture can affect the pliability of your fascia causing
tension in the body. A normal healthy fascia moves freely with you when you
reach or bend or just walk and sit. Restricted fascia will cause a feeling of
tightness and/or pain when you move. Many people feel an immediate difference
after their first fascia release, saying they feel more flexible now. Just bending without pain is very liberating.
